It is easy to confuse the signs and symptoms of leaky gut syndrome with other disorders of the digestive system. Even within the medical community, there are many who are totally unaware of the condition or have very little knowledge about it.

Leaky gut syndrome is also called 'intetinal permeability disorder' and is a direct reference to the leakiness of the lining of the gut. This may be the result of damage caused by infections or inflammation of the bowel.

When the gut lining is inflamed, the cells that make up the surface layer become swollen and gaps appear in between them. This permits toxins and bacteria from the gut to seep through and enter the blood stream. As a consequence, the body reacts with an allergic or inflammatory response. This is the result of these invaders being recognized by the immune system as 'foreign' and therefore repelled.

Another effect of the damage to the gut lining is that the intestine produces less of the juices necessary for digestion. This leads to certain symptoms that are characteristic of leaky gut syndrome.

What causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?

The syndrome is of unknown cause, but anything that damages or irritates the intestinal lining can result in it. The list of potential causes is extensive and includes:

  • parasites
  • allergens
  • bacteria
  • fungal infections (candidiasis)
  • food intolerance
  • drugs

An unhealthy diet that is rich in processed sugar and low in fiber has been found to predispose to leaky gut in the future. Too much coffee or alcohol is also likely to increase the risk of the syndrome.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome

The early symptoms are non-specific and can easily be attributed to other conditions. They may include:

  • gum diseases
  • feeling bloated
  • heartburn
  • irregular bowel habits
  • intestinal gas
  • feeling depressed

A factor causing these symptoms may be the reduction in digestive enzymes produced by the gut lining.

In the later stages of the disease, other symptoms appear.

  • food allergies
  • joint pain
  • chronic fatigue
  • migraine headaches
  • eczema and skin rash
  • digestive problems

At this point, the lining of the bowel is badly breached and partially digested food gets into the blood stream through these gaps.

Advanced Leaky Gut Syndrome

In the very advanced stages of the disease, severe symptoms are noted.

  • arthritis
  • candida and fungal infections
  • colon inflammation with diarrhea
  • thyroid problems
  • neurological and brain problems

Early treatment can prevent such advanced levels of intestinal permeability to wreak havoc. Starting therapy sooner will avoid many of these problems. By noticing the leaky gut syndrome symptoms earlier, the underlying causes can be identified and suitable treatment started.

Leaky Gut Syndrome symptoms can be misleading. To know more about how to detect the condition early enough to avoid complications, see this report on "Leaky Gut Syndrome Symptoms"

Learning more about leaky gut syndrome and the various options available to prevent and treat it is therefore very important. "Leaky Gut Cure" is a nice little guide to understanding what's at stake and how to prevent ill effects from this poorly understood condition.
